Identify and treatment of Food Poisoning

First aid means the immediate care given to an injured person or someone who suffers sudden illness in other that life is preserved, healing is promoted, the victim is at rest (feeling safe) and further injury is prevented.

Looking at food poisoning from Google search is "illness caused by bacteria or other toxins in food, typically with vomiting, diarrhea and cramping abdominal pain". Food poisoning most times, tend to resolve on it's own but in most cases, it is expected not to last for more than 2 days after which the victim should be alright but if this symptoms continue, then it's best you contact health-care professionals for better treatments.


Food poisoning can be annoying especially with it's symptoms making one uncomfortable and in pains. Symptoms of food poisoning are as follows:-

  • Stomach ache, 
  • Vomiting, 
  • Fever,
  • Nausea,  
  • Headache, 
  • Joint aches 
  • Blood in your stool. 
  • Dehydrated and feeling of dizziness.
Testing for Food Poisoning
If your illness does not stop after 2 days, you need to see the doctor. The doctor can diagnose you based on detailed history such as how long you have been sick, type of food you ate.

In other to carry out the test,


Blood test will be order should the doctor suspect that the infection would have enter your blood. Blood test can detect the bacteria and tell how sick you are



Imagining test MRI and CT scan can be use, this can help rule out other causes for your symptoms should it be something else.

Stool cultures, A sample of your stool is requested by your Doctor and is to the laboratory, where they try to identify the infectious organism.

Treatment for Food poisoning

If the symptoms becomes severe and test has been carried out, the treatment of food poisoning may include:
  • Antibiotics. Antibiotics, is prescribe with detailed instruction on how to take it by the doctor. This instruction must be adhered to by the patient.
  • Replacement of lost fluids.
    Replacement of lost fluids comes as a result of severe or persistent diarrhea or vomiting in which the patient is hospitalize in other to receive treatment. 
Note, first aid response to food poisoning should be to allow the victim or patient:
  • Rest - by this, you allow the body to recover on it's own.
  • Eat - After vomiting, wash your mouth and try eating again.
  • Re hydrate - Take electrolytes drink or lots of water to re hydrate your system.
  • Dial 999 if response level reduces or there's no response.
