Born Twice: Baby Survived Surgery, Sent Into The Womb And Born Again

The hope of LynLee Hope (a new born) since to have had a doubt as it was discovered that a tumor know as Sacrococcygeal Teratoma was growing in her. Sacrococcygeal Teratoma (SCT) is an unusual tomor (growth), commonly found in female babies than male babies. They usually appear or grow in the newborn and is located at the base of the tailbone (coccyx).

LynLee Hope had to undergo a crucial operation at 23 weeks after which she was returned to her mother’s womb. She healed and continued to grow until she was born again at the 36 weeks.

The surgeon who performed the operation is Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, a Nigerian but based in U.S. Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye performed the operations with his partner Dr. Darrell Cass of Texas Children’s Hospital.

The journeys that lead to this testimony began when Margaret Boemer went for a routine ultrasound 16 weeks into her pregnancy with her third child. What they discovered was not what they expected. “They saw something on the scan. The doctor said it was Sacrococcygeal teratome (an unusual tumor located at the base of the tailbone). The doctor said it was not something to be joked with as it could affect the life of the baby”.
According to Dr. Cass, the tumor is trying to grow by sucking blood flow from the baby; the baby on the other hand is also trying to grow. It then becomes a competition and in most cases the tumor wins the competition, the baby dies because the heart just can’t keep up and the heart goes into failure and the baby dies.

Margaret Boemer was advised by other doctors to terminate the pregnancy but she listened to Dr. Cass and his team who told her about another option which wasn’t easy as her baby’s chance of survival would be grim.

According to Margaret Boemer, it was an easy decision for her. According to her, the tumor was shutting her heart down and causing her to go into cardiac failure, so it was a choice of allowing the tumor to take over her baby’s body or give her a chance of life by accepting the surgical operation.

Clockwise News gathered that during the surgery (operation), the baby’s heart stopped working. Dr. Cass gave credits to the heart specialist who was a member of their team for being able to control the situation, giving the right medication and transfusing the right amount of fluid which allowed the surgeons proceed with the operation.

The success of the operation was that the bulk of the tumor was removed; the baby was placed back into her mother’s womb. The mother’s uterus was sewed back.

Margaret Boemer was placed on bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy and in another 36 weeks Lynlee Hope was born through a C-section and was faced with another ordeal as the doctor’s battle to remove the bits of tumor that the surgeons could not reach at the initial stage which had begun to grow.

Credits are given to the mother of this child for her bravery as well as the Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye and his team.
